Professional Bio

Christopher J. Brooks is Chief Scientist and Division Director at Honda Research Institute USA, Inc. (HRI-US). In this role, he helps guide Honda North America’s research and strategy toward a carbon-sustainable society. He also serves as Division Director for HRI’s Materials Science Division, which focuses on materials for energy applications and low-dimensional materials.

Dr. Brooks joined Honda R&D Americas, Inc. in 1999, and throughout his career at Honda has led materials science research with a strong environmental focus. His work has spanned the development of materials for advanced propulsion systems, including fuel cell electric vehicles (and associated hydrogen generation systems), battery electric vehicles, and next-generation diesel catalyst systems.

His research experience also includes the electrochemical reduction of CO₂ to carbon-neutral hydrocarbon fuels. More recently, his work has focused on battery technologies, encompassing active materials and recycling strategies for current lithium-ion batteries as well as novel research for beyond–lithium-ion energy storage technologies.

Dr. Brooks is the holder of more than 40 granted U.S. patents and the author of over 60 peer-reviewed publications and technical presentations.
