Ian Smith

Ian Smith graduated from the Colorado School of Mines with a BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering. Ian has a decade of experience testing powertrains and lithium-ion batteries for the automotive and other transportation industries. He is currently the Automotive & Transportation Battery Product Manager at UL Solutions. In his role, he is responsible for supporting UL Solutions’ North American battery testing services along with expanding existing services or developing new services. Before coming to UL Solutions, Ian Smith was the Manager of the Electrified Powertrain section at Southwest Research institute where he was responsible for testing and R&D activities on lithium-ion batteries (cell, module and pack). As Manager, he led the team's revenue growth, customer base diversification, investment in new capital equipment for cycling and abuse testing and provided technical oversight and direction for various battery test, certification and development programs along with industry consortia. Ian has direct experience with battery test standards such as the USABC BEV & PHEV Battery Test Manuals, UL 2580, UL 9540a, SAE J2464, UN 38.3, UN ECE R100, DO-311A, MIL-PRF-32565C and NAVY S9310 along with OEM-specific developmental test procedures.
